Gardeners Hendon is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and industry guidance and aim to maintain high standards of safe working practice across all gardening activities.

This Health and Safety Policy sets out our general arrangements and expectations. It applies to all work carried out by Gardeners Hendon, including private gardens, communal grounds, commercial outdoor spaces and any other locations where we operate.

Our Health And Safety Objectives

Employees and contractors must take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. They must follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear required personal protective equipment, and report hazards, near misses, incidents and defective equipment without delay.

Clients are expected to provide accurate information about site conditions where we are required to work, and to cooperate with us in managing any shared risks.

Risk Assessment And Safe Systems Of Work

Gardeners Hendon will conduct risk assessments for typical gardening activities such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, tree work within our competence, planting, weed control, clearing waste, and the operation of powered machinery and hand tools. Where work presents particular risks, task specific assessments and safe systems of work will be prepared.

Assessments will consider hazards including slips and trips, manual handling, noise, vibration, flying debris, sharp tools, machinery hazards, chemicals, adverse weather, working near roads, working at height where applicable, and interaction with the public. Training, Information And Supervision

Use Of Tools, Machinery And Equipment

Gardeners Hendon will ensure that tools, machinery and equipment used in our gardening operations are suitable for the task, properly maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals. Defective equipment must be taken out of use immediately and reported for repair or replacement.

Only competent persons who have received appropriate instruction may operate powered equipment such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, blowers, strimmers, chainsaws within our defined scope of work, and similar machinery. Machine guards and safety features must never be removed or bypassed. Equipment will be transported and stored safely to prevent damage, fuel spills and unauthorised use.

Staff will be instructed in good manual handling techniques and encouraged to take regular breaks, particularly when carrying out repetitive work such as digging, raking or hedge cutting.

Working Environment And Public Safety

Work areas will be set up to minimise risk to others, for example by using barriers, signs or a safe working perimeter where appropriate when using powered tools or machinery.
